Fans damage chairs during Afghanistan-England match at Gaddafi Stadium

Afghanistan secured a stunning eight-run victory over England in the Champions Trophy match on Wednesday, eliminating the latter from the tournament.

Afghanistan posted a total of 325-7, with opening batter Ibrahim Zadran scoring the highest-ever individual score of the tournament—177 runs off 146 balls, including 12 fours and six sixes.

In response, England was bowled out for 317, with Joe Root contributing 120 runs off 111 balls

During the match, fans damaged chairs in the newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium. The videos of the damaged chairs also went viral on social media.

The incident follows a similar event at National Stadium Karachi during the Afghanistan vs South Africa match, where fans were also reported to have broken stadium property.

Both Gaddafi Stadium and National Stadium Karachi, along with Rawalpindi Stadium, were recently upgraded as part of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Rs 12.80 billion project to improve the facilities for the Champions Trophy 2025.

Meanwhile, rain disrupted the ninth fixture of the ICC Champions Trophy between Pakistan and Bangladesh at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday, causing the match to be washed out.

This is the second consecutive washout at the venue, following the Australia vs South Africa match the previous day.

In Group A, Bangladesh finished ahead of Pakistan on net run rate (-0.443 compared to -1.087). Both teams ended their campaigns with one point each, having failed to progress in the tournament.

India and New Zealand advanced from Group A, while in Group B, South Africa, Australia, and Afghanistan are competing for semi-final spots.
