Climate win
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Party’s victory in this week’s German elections is expected to maintain the country’s commitment to its existing climate goals. Germany has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65 per cent compared to 1990 levels by 2030, 88 per cent by 2040, and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
Additionally, the country plans to phase out its last coal-fired power plant by 2038, although this target may be challenging following the shutdown of its nuclear facilities. While the CDU has its own policy agenda, it is hoped that the party will uphold Germany’s leadership in climate action both within the EU and globally.
