Punjab government decides to abolish 17 consumer courts

Lahore; Government of Punjab has decided to abolish 17 consumer courts.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has allowed the summary to the provincial cabinet in connection with the termination of the Consumer Courts. Amendments will be made in the Punjab Consumer Act 2005.

According to the documents, the summary suggests that the Lahore High Court will be appointed district judges in one or more districts in consultation with the Lahore High Court. Who will serve as a consumer court.

According to the report, a total of 8,381 cases have been filed in the current consumer courts in the last 3 years. And a huge amount of Rs 98 crore 19 lakh 88 thousand was allocated for these cases.

The summary pointed out that the number of cases in the Consumer Courts is very low but the costs are very high. An average of Rs. 17,167 per case has been spent, which is a heavy burden on the treasury.

In the last financial year, only 1,864 cases were heard, for which a budget of Rs 15 crore 20 lakh had to be allocated.

It is pertinent to mention that the Punjab government has given Lahore, Gujaranwala, Gujarat, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Faisalabad Sahiwal, Multan, Dera Ghaza Khan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar, Leh, Bhakkar, Mianwali and Mandi to protect the rights of consumers. Consumer courts were established in Bahauddin.
