Silent cries
Mental health is a crucial issue affecting millions of people in Pakistan, but still neglected by all, despite its alarming prevalence. Mental health remains heavily stigmatised in Pakistan, leading to a lack of understanding and resources for people in need. It is estimated that 34 per cent of Pakistan’s population suffers from mental illness, ranging from anxiety and depression to more severe conditions like schizophrenia.
However, there are only 5000 trained psychiatrists, mostly in urban areas, and even there, many people do not seek the treatment they need due to the stigma attached to mental difficulties. The government needs to invest in education, raise awareness to reduce stigma, and ensure accessible services nationwide. Schools should implement mental health programmes and the government must increase funding for mental health care, especially in rural areas.
