The uninvited
This letter refers to the news report ‘Russia, US to name negotiators on ending Ukraine war’ (February 19, 2025). While the European Union wants a seat at the negotiations table, the same EU was fanning the flames of the war during the Joe Biden presidency. There was no serious or concrete effort made to stop the war and bring both parties to the negotiating table. Now that the new US administration seems serious about peace, the EU wants a seat. Fair enough. But they have to wait until the modalities have been finalised. Russia is not interested in talking to the EU unless it becomes necessary to bring them in.
As for the Ukrainian president, who is not happy with his exclusion from the US-Russia talks, some reports said he pre-emptively said that he will not attend the meet in the first place. Then why complain now? If and when this war stops, he has to go to elections. Perhaps he wants the status quo to continue. The bottom line is, the powers that matter are starting to talk about peace.
