Is WhatsApp down? Users face disruptions as thousands report technical issues

WhatsApp users worldwide have reported significant technical issues, with thousands experiencing connectivity problems and difficulties sending messages.

According to outage monitoring service Downdetector, more than 50,000 reports were logged on Friday afternoon, indicating widespread disruptions to the popular messaging app. While most complaints centered on connectivity failures, some users also reported issues with message delivery.

With WhatsApp experiencing technical issues, many users took to other platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) to report the disruption and discuss its impact.

Additionally, some reports suggested minor disruptions to Facebook and Facebook Messenger, although these were significantly fewer compared to the WhatsApp outage.

WhatsApp, which boasts nearly three billion users globally, has faced similar disruptions in the past. The most recent mass outage for Meta-owned platforms occurred in December, affecting WhatsApp and Instagram.

Meta’s last major global outage in 2021 saw all of its key services—including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—go offline for nearly six hours, causing significant disruption worldwide.

Meta’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently highlighted the company’s focus on expanding its messaging services, particularly in the United States, where it aims to solidify its position as the leading messaging platform.

As of now, no official cause for the outage has been confirmed.
