Marco Silva’s men progress in FA Cup

Bernd Leno was the decisive figure as Fulham eliminated Manchester United from the FA Cup, saving two penalties in a dramatic shootout at Old Trafford.

The Cottagers secured a quarter-final spot, avenging their controversial exit to United two seasons ago.

After both teams converted their first three spot-kicks, Leno denied Victor Lindelof before Antonee Robinson extended Fulham’s advantage. The German then saved Joshua Zirkzee’s effort, sealing Fulham’s place in the last eight.

Fulham took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Calvin Bassey was left unmarked at the far post, heading home from a Rodrigo Muniz flick-on.

United equalised through Bruno Fernandes, who drove in a low shot from the edge of the area after receiving a pass from Diogo Dalot.

Both sides had opportunities to win in regulation time. Emile Smith Rowe was twice denied by Andre Onana, while Leno produced a sharp reaction save to stop 17-year-old Chido Obi’s effort late on. In extra time, Leno thwarted United substitute Alejandro Garnacho, setting the stage for his match-winning shootout display.

Reflecting on the victory, Fulham manager Marco Silva praised his team’s progress since their last FA Cup meeting with United. “We are more mature, but the identity is the same. Everyone can see Fulham is a very good club in the Premier League,” Silva said.

Fulham, aiming to reach their first FA Cup final since 1975, could take inspiration from Portsmouth’s unexpected triumph in 2008. With only Manchester City remaining from England’s dominant clubs, a surprise winner is possible.

For United, the defeat adds to a difficult run under Ruben Amorim, marking their 10th loss in 24 matches since his arrival. Despite moments of promise, including a flowing first-half move that ended in a Fernandes shot saved by Leno, United struggled with defensive lapses and inconsistency.

Amorim now faces increased scrutiny as United’s path to European qualification narrows. The FA Cup exit leaves them with few remaining opportunities to salvage their season.
