Trump’s hand bruise: Doctors explain possible causes, dismiss concerns |
Doctors raised concerns after a bruise appeared on US President Donald Trump’s hand in photos following his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House on Monday, where they discussed the conflict in Ukraine, reported Daily Mail.
What are the possible causes of the bruise?
A White House spokesperson suggested that the bruise was likely caused by shaking hands with hundreds of individuals throughout Trump’s campaign and public duties, as per Daily Mail.
However, doctors noted that Trump’s age—78—could be a factor, as older individuals tend to have more fragile blood vessels.
Could it be from an IV or blood draw?
Dr Neal H Patel, an internist at Providence St. Joseph Hospital, speculated that the bruise might have been caused by an IV or blood draw. He explained that IV needles sometimes damage veins, causing blood to leak into surrounding tissues.
However, Dr Stuart Fischer clarified that the bruise wasn’t in the right spot for this to be the case, as there aren’t enough veins there, according to Daily Mail.
Is handshaking responsible?
Despite speculation on social media, both Dr. Fischer and Dr. Patel dismissed the idea that excessive handshaking was the cause. Dr Patel stated, “I see a lot of patients who are businessmen, and I’ve never really seen them getting bruising from too much handshaking,” as quoted by Daily Mail.
Doctors say it’s not an emergency
Both doctors emphasized that the bruise wasn’t a sign of any major health issue. Dr. Fischer reassured, “I definitely don’t think it’s any kind of emergency,” as quoted by Daily Mail.
Could the bruise be linked to Trump’s age?
Yes, Dr Fischer noted that Trump’s age could make his blood vessels more fragile, making bruising more likely.
Is the bruise a sign of something serious?
No, both doctors agreed that while the bruise looks alarming, it does not indicate a serious health condition or emergency.
