
Pakistan’s external debt has increased by 21.3 trillion rupees in 16 years, Ministry of Finance

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Ministry of Finance has said that the external debt of the country has increased by 21.3 trillion rupees and the internal debt by 40.2 trillion rupees during the last 16 years.
According to the data released by the Ministry of Finance, in the last 16 years (2008 to 2024), the internal debt of the country increased by 40.2 trillion and the external debt by 21.3 trillion.
In June 2008, the government debt was Rs 6.1 trillion, which will reach Rs 67.5 trillion in 2024. In June 2008, internal debt was Rs 3.3 trillion and external debt was Rs 2.9 trillion.
According to the data, in June 2024, internal debt was 43.4 trillion and external debt was 24.1 trillion rupees. During the year 16, loans increased by Rs 18.9 trillion due to other matters. In 2008, the government debt was 6.1 trillion and in 2013 it was 12.7 trillion rupees, which became 25 trillion rupees in 2018.
In 2016, loans increased by Rs 10.2 trillion due to primary deficit and in 2016, loans increased by Rs 32.3 trillion due to interest expenses.

The Ministry of Finance says that in 16 years, the loans increased by 18.9 trillion rupees due to other issues. In 2008, the government debt was 6.1 trillion and in 2013 it was 12.7 trillion. 25 billion in 2018. In 2019, the government debt was 32.7 trillion rupees, which increased to 49.2 trillion rupees in 2022. In 2023, the government debt was 62.9 trillion rupees.
In 2019, the debt increased by 7.8 trillion rupees, 9.4 trillion in 2022 and 13.6 trillion in 2023, but this year the national debt has reached 67.5 trillion.
