LAHORE: Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (Punjab Zone) has placed various conditions before the government to start the next crushing season.
An emergency meeting of Pakistan Sugar Mills Association was held. In which all the members of sugar mills of Punjab participated. According to the spokesman, the sugar mills will not operate till then. Until the stock of sugar with the sugar mills is exhausted.
He said that the sugar industry has been seeking permission to export 1.5 million tonnes of surplus sugar stock for the past several months. Out of which the government has allowed to export about two and a half lakh tons of sugar.
Members of the sugar mills said that it was not feasible to start the crushing season with such strict regulation.
It has been unanimously decided that the next crushing season will not start until then. Until the sugar industry is fully deregulated at the provincial and federal levels. It does not enjoy free market facilities like wheat, rice and maize crops.

All the members unanimously decided that as long as the remaining 12.5 lakh tonnes of surplus stock of sugar is in the warehouses of the mills. The sugar industry will not be able to run the mills.
All these measures are being taken for the right of farmers. Starting the next crushing season with the presence of this stock will trap farmers’ funds. Apart from this, the sale of sugar in the market is also negligible.
The spokesperson said that the sugar industry is the only industry in the country. Which has been playing its role well in the form of depositing a lot of foreign exchange in the government treasury for the development and prosperity of the country without any government subsidy and without being a burden on the national grid.
