Mohammad Rizwan likely to become captain

LAHORE: After Babar Azam’s resigned from his role as captain of the T20 and ODI teams on Tuesday, Mohammad Rizwan is being touted as the strongest candidate to take over the mantle.

Sources told Geo News that Rizwan is being considered for the role of ODI captain and that the relevant officials will be holding consultations with the wicket keeper for team selection.

The Pakistani Cricket team is in the midst of leadership changes in the white ball formats following Azam’s departure from captaincy. With hopes of promoting young talent, coupled with a poor performance at the ICC Mens T20 World Cup 2024, Head coach Gary Kirsten wanted to steer the team in a new direction.

Sources have stated that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering Mohammad Haris for the T20I Captaincy. Kirsten had recommended Azam to focus on the One Day International (ODI) format, but the idea didn’t sit well with the batsman.

He reportedly felt sidelined from decision making and opposed the idea of captaining only the ODI squad. Disagreement with Kirsten’s vision for the team’s future led to Azam resigning from both positions after consulting with family and close friends.

The PCB Chairman, Kirsten, and other members of the selection committee are expected to decide soon, according to sources.
