Decision to develop chemical technology from coal in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: China has decided to develop chemical technology from coal in Pakistan with the support of Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).

China’s Shanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group has expressed interest in investing in technology and joint ventures to produce chemicals from coal deposits in the southern region of Sindh province.

Shanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group is one of China’s largest state-owned enterprises. Which has made significant investments in coal, chemical and energy sectors. This project will be a prime example of the growing cooperation between Pakistan and China in energy, petrochemicals and industrial development.

Pakistan is looking to meet its energy needs by increasing coal-fired generation in cooperation with China to reduce the cost of power generation.

In this regard, Petroleum Minister Mossadegh Malik informed the officials of the Chinese coal firm and said that there are vast reserves of coal in Pakistan. And under this plan, Pakistan is determined to make full and effective use of its natural resources.

He said that Pakistan is mining about 7.6 million tonnes of coal annually from Thar. And plans to increase it to 11 million tonnes in 3 years.

Mossadegh Malik said that Pakistan can play an important role in stabilizing the country’s economy by effectively using all natural resources including coal reserves in Thar. China’s cooperation is unprecedented.
