India all out for 46 in historic performance by New Zealand

Bengaluru: India were all out for 46 in the first innings of their first test on Thursday, as New Zealand fast bowlers Matt Henry and William O’Rourke obliterated their batting line-up.

Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravincandran Ashwin were all sent off for zero.

It was India’s lowest total ever at home, and the third lowest overall. Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravincandran Ashwin all contributed to the historic loss as they were all sent off for zero.

MATT HENRY

Matt Henry took five wickets, taking out Sarfaraz Khan in the 10th over, after the Indian batter faced ten balls and made zero runs. After frustration piled, Sarfaraz tried to launch a counterattack, but only launched the ball into Devon Conway’s hands.

In the 23rd over Henry took two wickets, first dismissing Ravindra Jadeja, after a soft leading edge sent the ball straight to Ajaz Patel. He would send off Ravichandran Ashwin on the very next ball, which was the first that the Indian allrounder faced. An incredible delivery hit the shoulder off the bat, making for an easy catch for Glenn Phillips.

Henry wouldn’t get the hat trick, but he would take another wicket just two overs later. This time it was Rishabh Pant, who edged the ball to second slip, allowing New Zealand skipper Tom Latham to take the catch. His fifth and final wicket of the first innings would come in the 32nd over. It would be the 100th wicket of Matt Henry’s test career. The ball found another edge, ricocheting off towards sub fielder Bracewell who dived and took the catch.

WILLIAM O’ROURKE

William O’Rourke was no slouch either, taking four wickets of his own in his first test in India, beginning with Kohli. Phillips dove to take an incredible catch, giving O’Roruke a wicket in his firs over of the match. O’Rourke would wait until the 21st over to strike again, this time dismissing Yashavi Jaiswal from a catch by Patel. He would strike again two overs later, dismissing Rahul, as the ball drifted down the leg slide, deflecting off Rahul’s bat and into the wicket keepers’ gloves.

JJ Bumrah would fall in the 27th over, as a delivery from O’Rourke would find the top edge of Bumrah’s bat, sending the ball towards deep square leg. Henry would run to his left from fine leg to take a diving catch.

TIM SOUTHEE

Time Southee would only have the opportunity to get one wicket, due to the dominance of Henry and O’Rourke, but it would be the one that started New Zealands domineering pressure.

RG Sharma was dismissed in the seventh over, after a wobble-seam delivery got past Sharma to hit the wicket.
