New Zealand avoid whitewash, win final test against England

HAMILTON: It took around 40 overs for New Zealand to take eight wickets on Tuesday, winning the third and final test against England by 423 runs.

SANTNER SHINES

Mitchell Santner took four wickets in the second innings, and seven overall in the contest. He began day four by sending off Joe Root in the 26th over after the England star missed a sweep, allowing the ball to strike him on the front pad. The umpire didn’t agree with Santner’s appeal, but the Kiwi’s used a review which found that the middle stump would have fallen. But, before he was sent off, Root added to his illustrious career with the 65th half century in tests.

Santner would then have a stellar spell later on, taking three wickets in quick succession, two of which came in the 46th over. On the very next ball after Gus Atkinson hit a four with a reverse-sweep, he would try his hand at another boundary, but instead would send the ball to deep cover where Glenn Phillips took the catch. Atkinson fell seven runs short of a half century.

Matthew Potts joined the fray next, and was sent off for a duck immediately on the second ball he faced. Potts attempted a long-shot which ended up at long-off in Tim Southee’s hands. Santner would end the match soon after in the 48th over by dismissing Brydon Carse, as the eager England batter charged down the pitch, only to miss the ball completely before Tom Blundell whipped off the bails.

THE SUPPORTING CAST

Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and William O’Rourke helped Santner along the way, taking England’s other five wickets (Ben Stokes did not bat due to injury). After Tim Southee kicked kicked off England’s demise early into their second innings, bowling Ben Duckett in the second over, Henry would dismiss Zak Crawley with an lbw in the fifth over. Henry would bowl Ollie Pope in the 43rd over after he failed to connect with a reverse-ramp attempt. That would be the sixth wicket for Henry in the match.

Southee got his second wicket earlier, by dismissing Jacob Bethell in the 35th over after his delivery got a thick outside edge on its way to Glenn Phillips at deep backward point. William O’Rourke’s only wicket of the innings would come in the 29th over, dismissing Harry Brook on the sixth ball he faced after he hit the ball to Daryl Mitchell in the slips.

New Zealand avoided a whitewash by winning the third and final match of the test series, as England’s final wicket fell while they still trailed by 423 runs.
