Australia and India no match for the rain, 3rd test drawn

BRISBANE: The relentless rain ruined another day of play, ending the third test without a winner. Thus, the five match test series between Australia and India remains tied 1-1.

A few overs into the final day of play, Travis Head would take the final wicket of India’s first innings. In the 79th over, Akash Deep strayed too far down the pitch, as he dragged his back foot out of the crease in an attempt to defend, allowing Alex Carey to whip the bails off.

Then, the race began. Australia needed to add a few more runs as fast as possible, declare, and get India all out by the end of the day to win the match. Unfortunately, the rain had other plans.

The game was delayed for two and half hours before Australia even took to the field for their second innings. Chances of avoiding a draw were looking slip, but at 12:30 PM in Brisbane, play resumed with Nathan McSweeney and Usman Khawaja.

With the pitch as beat up as it was, and Australia looking to put on runs quickly, the Aussies started dropping like flies. Before the 10th over was up, Australia were four down. Bumrah was responsible for two wickets, bowling Usman Khawaja in the third over and dismissing Marnus Labuschagne in the seventh with some help from Rishabh pant who took the catch after the delivery from the Indian fast bowler found a thick edge.

Akash Deep took the other two, dismissing McSweeney and Mitchell Marsh in the eighth and tenth over respectively. Pant continued to put in work, taking two more catches after Akash found two edges.

Steven Smith would be dismissed in the 11th over by Mohammed Siraj. It was Pant once again who took the catch, diving to his left to secure the dismissal. Head made 17 runs before he was sent off in the 15th over, after Siraj found the top edge of the Aussie’s bat, and Pant had his fifth catch of the innings.

Alex Carey and Aussie skipper Pat Cummins made 20 and 22 runs respectively, helping Australia to increase their lead by as much as possible. Bumrah would get his third wicket in the 18th over, dismissing Cummins on a delivery that he smashed high into the air. KL Rahul settled underneath it and took the catch. After Mitchell Starc came to the field and scored a couple runs, Australia declared with an innings score of 89.

With little time left in the day, a draw was a foregone conclusion. India played two overs before rain began pouring down again. Around 3:30 PM, the game was called a draw.
