The passengers were businessmen returning home for Christmas, said the mayor of Ingende, the last town on the river before the crash site, Joseph Joseph Kangolingoli. According to a local resident, more than 400 people were on board the boat.

It should be noted that at least 78 people lost their lives in October while 80 people lost their lives in a similar accident near Kinshasa in June.
